DIY Bench Power Supply

Turn your old ATX PC power supply into a bench power supply. You'll get 3.3V, 5V, +12V and -12V fixed voltage outputs with high current capabilities (depending on the power supply you use) and one output with adjustable voltage (0.5-30V) and adjustable current limit (up to 4A).

Open Source Hardware

Simply 3d print the front and the back panel, cut some 4mm plywood to size and source some components. All design files are available on github, ready for tinkering.

Required Parts

You'll need the following parts to build the power supply. For those to be bought a link to AliExpress is included (I may get a comission if you use those). For the parts to be made yourself the required plans and file are linked.

The parts cost about 23 USD, the PCB (5 pieces) cost around 12 USD and the material costs of the front and back panel in PLA are around 3 USD. Thus your total costs would be around 40 USD, without the power supply.

ATX Power Supply

Either you have one lying around from an old computer, or get an old one second hand. The wattage does not matter, even 200W are plenty. There are different form factors for PC Power supplies. Make sure to get an ATX power supply. Those have 150 mm width, 86 mm height, and typically 140 mm depth.

Also make sure to have 4 screws ready. They typically come with the power supply. If you need to buy some, the size is UTS #6-32, 6mm length should do fine but technically the length depends on the power supply.

DC DC Converter

The ZK-4KX is a small DC-DC converter which can convert the input voltage both up and down. The output voltage and the output current limit can be freely adjusted. The converter is powered from the 12V rail of the ATX power supply.

Output Voltage 0.5-30V
Output Current 0-4A

ATX Power Connectors

You need at least a 24 pin connector (2x12 Pin, Molex Mini-Fit Jr.). Modern power supplies have multiple 12V rails. To use the maximum power capacity you need an additional 6 pin connector (2x3 pin, Molex Mini-Fit Jr.). Otherwise don't forget to close the solder jumper during asssembly.

Plywood

Get some 4mm plywood according to the dimensions below. Some hardware store offer cutting services, otherwise just cut it yourself.

2x Sides 106x240mm

Assembly

  1. Solder Molex Connectors to PCB
  2. Solder wires to connect the switch and the DC DC converter to PCB
  3. Older power supplies do not have PCIe (6 pin) power connectors. In this case add some solder over the two solder jumpers "Solder GND" and "Solder 12V" on the PCB.
  4. Screw banana posts into front panel
  5. Screw PCB to banana Plugs
  6. Insert switch and DC-DC Converter into front panel, connect to PCB
  7. Glue top and sides into grooves of front and back panel
  8. Plug the ATX Power supply in and fix it to back plate
